Cornwall Search Dogs is run entirely by volunteers, and we rely on a wide range of people - not just dog handlers - to keep the team running smoothly. You don’t need to be in the field with a dog to make a meaningful contribution.
If you're interested in the work we do but don't have a dog, you can still get actively involved as part of our Dog Support Team. These volunteers join us on training exercises, often acting as the ‘misper’ (missing person) so our dogs can practise realistic search scenarios. It’s a fun and important role, and a great way to learn how the team works.
With experience and further training, Dog Support volunteers may also become involved in live search callouts, working alongside handlers to provide essential support in the field. This can include navigating, radio communication, and liaising with other search assets - all without needing to handle a dog yourself.
We have a dedicated Drone Team, to assist in searches. If you’re a qualified drone pilot or interested in training towards that, we’d love to hear from you - the ability to cover large areas quickly and safely from the air is an increasingly important part of modern search operations.
We’re also looking for reliable and enthusiastic volunteers to support us at fundraising events. This might include helping with merchandise stalls, talking to the public about our work, collecting donations, or assisting with set-up and pack-down. You don’t need prior experience - just a willingness to get stuck in and be part of the team.
Our Support Team plays a crucial behind-the-scenes role - from managing equipment to coordinating training logistics. If you’re well-organised and enjoy working collaboratively, this could be a good fit.
Whatever your background or availability, there’s likely a role for you. Volunteering with Cornwall Search Dogs means being part of a community that’s passionate, committed, and focused on saving lives.
